Chapter 30

  • I would have been terrified if my child had gone missing.
  • No parent would ever want their child to be gone without knowing where they are. That would be the worst feeling in the world.
  • I don't understand why Maya did not scold him for running off.
  • Maya now understands the importance of being a mother.
  • Maya has done a fantastic job coming back to be with her son Clyde. Now she can focus on what really matters in life.

  • How did it feel to be at a wonderful place such as Hawaii?
  • Where and what happened to Guy? Is he missing on the boat?
  • How was Maya feeling when she realized that her son was now missing?

  • I cant believe that Wilkie made Maya write down everything she can do and is grateful for.
  • Maya taught me never to complain over something so little when you are healthy and have everything or close to everything in life.
  • It's great that Clyde and Maya finally reconciled their relationship.
  • It must have been rough to live with a mother who you constantly have to check if she is still in her room to make sure she will never leave you.
  • I think that Clyde maybe traumatized because of his mother's consistent absence in his life.

  • Why did Maya put the thought of killing herself in to her mind?
  • How could killing yourself and your only child solve any pain in your life? If anything it would just enable you to move forward.

  • It surprises me that Maya came out of her shell so quickly when it came to learning all these new languages in just two weeks at a time.
  • I am proud that Clyde is happy with his mother following her dream to becoming a singer.He seems really supportive.
  • I love the way the harmony sounds when it comes to music, to me that is the message to every ones soul.
  • You can tell that Maya knows she is the best at singing as soprano.
  • Can it seem as much as a bother to you when it comes to Maya's mother calling her all through out the trip to another country besides Zabrea.

  • I don't understand why Maya puts up with the way the waitress mistreats her.
  • Maya must be excited for getting another job offer.
  • Maya had a flashback when she spoke about her past relationships with men.
  • Throughout the chapters it seems to me that Maya is becoming more matured and developed such as gradually improving her personality.
  • Ethel and Martha seem to becoming more closer friends.

  • Why does one of the madame's in store shop answer Maya's question incorrectly;;Is it because she did not her foreign language correctly?
  • Zagreb is not a place where there is many colored people..Why is that?

  • I don't understand how the actors on the European tours could remember all of their lines.
  • I wish I could have seen Maya perform live.
  • It must have taken alot of hard work fo may to keep her her voice so creamy and vibrant during performances.
  • I would have loved to perform beside Maya at the time she was on the European tour.
  • Maya had a flashback regarding her mother and how she rasied her to be a strong women.

  • Maya is a very jealous person when it comes to not getting a specific job.
  • Maya foreshadowed when she would lose previous jobs and compare them to her now acting jobs.
  • Maya must really love her son Clyde if she took him to an opera that is strictly for staff only.
  • Clyde is only mentioned through his mother's eyes so he is an indirect character.
  • Tosh is an indirect character because he is only mentioned 3 xs in the story.

Chapters 11-13

  • I don't understand why women degrade their bodies such as Marguerite.
  • It bothers me to hear that people think that exotic dancing is an appopriate jod, most women take those jobs to get easy money for their homes. Who am I to judge?
  • I am happy that Marguerite came to her senses and quit her dancing job.
  • I wonder if Marguerite ever shared her private life with any of her family.
  • I woul not have had the cougare to stand up and perform for a group of men. That is beyond me!

  • Do colored women get payed differently than the white women in the work station?
  • Why does this girl keep flipping in her stripper audition? Does she think that her body will sell?
  • When it comes to my mind selling my body will never become an option.
  • I wonder if Marguerite ever had a second thought to having to dance to make a living.

  • I would think that Marguerite would have more respect for herself than to strip.



  • While Marguerite was changing into her dance clothes she had a flashback of her rape that might happen increasingly.

  • It must have been hard dancing infront of all those people for Marguerite.

  • "No matter how good a fellow seems on the outside, you have to take him home to know him." This is a flashback to Marguerite's mother speaking of men. This reminds me of the quote "never judge a book by it's cover"

  • I wonder if Clyde is taking the separation of his parents well... He probably is since his mother is spending alot of time with him.

  • I cannot believe that the author was raped at an age of seven.(this is a flashback.)
  • I guess that the separation of the marriage between Tosh and Marguerite was for the best.
  • Clyde needs to understand that his mother is not the culprit in the marraige and that it is not her fault for the separation.
  • The love for him will always be in his mothers heart he has no reason to blame anyone for the separation of his parents (Clyde is the son.)
  • I wonder how it was so easy to mend the friendship back in the marraige.
